Fire Inspection Preparation
Prior to your fire inspection you will need to insure that the following is met:
- You have at least one 5 lb fire extinguisher rated 2-A: 10-B:C or larger. The extinguisher should be mounted in or near the child care room, chest high but out of smaller children’s reach. (Must be inspected annually by a 3rd party and monthly by provider)
- Unused outlets are covered and only UL listed extension cords are used for portable appliances and not as a substitute for permanent wiring.
- Residents of the City of Jacksonville and ETJ must have smoke detectors that are electric with battery back up and are interconnected, with a minimum of one installed in each bedroom, hallway, and in the primary childcare room. (no wood paneling allowed in child care room)
- County residence should check with the inspector for quantity and placement. You must have at least one electric smoke detector with battery back up or an electric with a battery operated one installed beside it.
- Exit signs should be posted over exit doors.
- Ensure that there in nothing blocking your water heater or circuit breaker/fuse panel. Allow approx. 36 inches of clearance around each.
- A fire evacuation route with marked exits is posted along with emergency numbers in a prominent place.
- You should have a designated outdoor meeting place established.
- You have a working telephone not dependent of electricity to function with emergency phone numbers posted nearby.
- Doors and windows in rooms used for sleeping open properly with little effort.
- All hallways, doorways, entrances, ramps, steps, and corridors are unobstructed, free of storage, and readily accessible.
